The Good News of the Gospel

What is the Gospel?

The Bible is central in all that we are as First Baptist Church. There are many stories in the Bible, but the central theme is the good news of the gospel – that Holy God became a man to save humanity.

Mankind was created by God to worship and enjoy fellowship with Him; but mankind rebelled against God (Gen. 3). Choosing to seek their own glory rather than the glory of the Creator, man chose sin, and death entered creation as a result (Romans 6:23a). Man, in his unrighteousness, could no longer have fellowship with a righteous God.

Since the fall, every human being has been born in sin and has chosen sin (Romans 1:18-32); we all fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Because God is just, He cannot let rebellion and sin go unpunished. Therefore, the result of sin is an eternal death separated from God in hell.

We cannot do enough good deeds, work hard enough, or go to church enough to earn a right-standing with God (Ephesians 2:1-3, 8-9). We are dead in our sin. We need a savior. And God, in His rich love and mercy, provided one – Himself. (Romans 5:8)

Christ, the coequal Son of God, became a man (John 1:14) and lived a perfect, sinless life. He, the righteous one, took on the unrighteousness of the world by willingly offering Himself on the cross as the only acceptable payment for our sin.

But Jesus didn’t stay dead! He rose from the dead, conquered death, ascended into heaven, and promised to return (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). Those who repent of their sin and place their faith in Christ’s work on the cross are given eternal life – to worship and enjoy their Creator (Romans 6:23).

God may be convicting you of your own sin even now as you read this. Maybe there’s never been a time when you’ve recognized your sin, repented of it, and trusted Christ for salvation. Will you confess that sin to God and place your hope for salvation in Jesus Christ? (John 3:16)

Don’t do this alone. We believe that God has called us not only to share the gospel, but to help people grow in their relationship with God. We would love to help you better understand the gospel and to show you what it means to follow Jesus. We invite you to contact us or attend one of our services for more information.
